VISUAL ART
ART APPLICATIONS
Art Applications: One Semester
The objective of this course is to start learning the elements and principles of Art. Open to all students, regardless of ability. Art Applications is an introductory class designed to acquaint students with various forms of art media, learn basic elements and principles of art, build confidence, and promote creativity. Artistic ability is not needed to take this course, but you must be motivated to listen and learn.
ART I
Art 1: Full Year
The objective of this course is to learn the elements and principles of art and proper use of two dimensional materials.
Pre-Requisite: Open to students who have completed Art Applications with a C or better, skills beyond basic and/or the recommendation of the instructor.
This course is focused on achieving state standards, and greater skill sets. Art 1 is intended for students interested in art and who desire to excel in this field of fine arts. This class will focus on drawing, coloring, state standards in production, applications to life, cultural and art history, and analysis of work. Painting I S2- Pre-Requisite: Open to students who have completed Art 1, Semester 1 with a C or better and/or the recommendation of the instructor. Painting 1 is a Semester 2 course of Art 1. This class will focus on basic painting skills, techniques, and proper use of materials. Students will produce paintings, apply it to life, analyze their work, and make connections to history. This course is designed to be the second semester of the first semester of Art by teacher recommendation only.
ART II
Art 2: Full Year
The first quarter objective of this course is a higher level of two-dimensional work and materials.
The second quarter objective is to introduce printmaking. The third quarter objective is higher level of painting. The fourth quarter objective is to introduce ceramics.
Pre-Requisite: Open to students who have completed Art 1 with a C or better and/or the recommendation of the instructor.
Skills are refined and expanded upon using various materials. Design principles and elements will be examined and applied to assignments. Students will be working in printmaking, clay, photography, Drawing, and mixed media/painting. Students will produce art work, apply it to life, analyze their work, and make connections to history. They will start establishing an art portfolio during this course. Regular assignments will be in the form of sketchbook drawings.
ART III AND IV
Art 3/4: Full Year
The objective of this course is to incorporate a higher level of work focusing on creative portfolios.
Pre-Requisite: Open to students who have completed Art 2 with a C or better and/or the recommendation of the instructor.
The student will continue working on their portfolio through individual contracts that are established by the student and the instructor. Students are expected to produce art work, apply it to life, analyze their work, and make connections to history. These courses are for students who are self-motivated to learn and compete. Regular assignments will be in the form of sketchbook drawings.
HONORS ART CLASS
Full Year (Recommended for students with a 3.5-4.0 GPA)
The objective of this course is to incorporate a higher level of work focusing on creative portfolios. Students establish a body of work to continue their art endeavors in their post-secondary education. This course will also include mentoring to younger Art students. Teacher Recommendation Only.
VOCAL MUSIC
**All choirs are a year-long courses**
Concert Choir
Prerequisite: NONE
Concert Choir is designed to meet the needs of all students interested in vocal music, regardless of prior experience. Emphasis of study will be the development of proper vocal techniques, music fundamentals, sight-singing skills, and performance practices. This is a performing ensemble, so students will perform in four concerts during the school year.
Treble Choir
Prerequisite: One Year in Concert Choir OR Audition
Treble Choir is for girls who have some choral experience or who have shown more advanced singing skills at her audition. Emphasis of study will be continued development and refinement of proper vocal techniques, music fundamentals, sight-singing skills, and performance practices. Students will perform in four concerts during the school year and participate in District Festival in the spring semester.
SAGE Show Choir
Prerequisite: Singing and Dancing Audition
Sage Show Choir is an upper level performance ensemble that provides girls with show choir experience. Students will perform all sorts of music, some with dancing and some without. Emphasis of study will be the continued development and refinement of proper vocal techniques, music fundamentals, sight-singing skills, and performance practices. Young women who have excelled in concert choir or treble choir, and have dance experience will be successful in this group. This choir will perform four times throughout the year and have multiple public performances. SAGE will also perform at District Festival.
Symphonic Choir
Prerequisite: High School Choir Experience AND Audition
Symphonic Choir is an upper level mixed-gender performance ensemble. Students must audition prior to registration and have experience in high school choir to be a part of this ensemble. Symphonic Choir will focus primarily on standard concert choir literature. Emphasis of study will be the continued development and refinement of proper vocal techniques, music fundamentals, sight-singing skills, and performance practices. Students will perform in four concerts during the school year and participate in District Festival.
JazzCo
Prerequisite: High School Choir Experience AND Audition
JazzCo is an upper level mixed-gender ensemble that provides students with experience singing jazz. Students will study the principles of jazz improvisation as they relate to chord structures, scales, and style. Emphasis of study will be the continued development and refinement of proper vocal techniques, music fundamentals, sight-singing skills, and performance practices. Students will perform in four concerts during the school year. JazzCo will also perform publicly and for school activities and events.
Stage Productions
Prerequisite: NONE
Students in stage productions will learn everything they need to know to produce a play or musical. If you are interested in acting, building, costuming, lighting, etc., this is the class for you. Emphasis of study is based around creativity, resourcefulness, open-mindedness, and courage.
MUSIC-INSTRUMENTAL
CONCERT BAND
Pre-Requisites: Prior instrumental music experience is a must.
Concert Band is an instrumental ensemble with an emphasis in performance. Only wind instruments should register for this class. Percussionists should register for the partner class: Percussion Ensemble. Students will develop proper technique on their instrument and fundamentals in reading music that will help students’ personal skills as a musician. Students will perform musically with quality tone production, rhythmic accuracy, dynamics, articulations, accurate pitch, and phrasing which will result in outstanding ensemble performances. This is a performing ensemble and as such, students will perform in two concerts a year (winter and spring), and other performances including various festivals and pep band.
PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE
Pre-Requisites: Prior percussion music experience is a must.
Percussion Ensemble is a partner class with the concert band, but only for percussionists. Students in this class are still a part of the concert band, but this is the class they register for. It is an instrumental ensemble with an emphasis in performance. Students will develop proper technique on their instrument and fundamentals in reading music that will help student’s personal skills as a musician. Students will perform musically with proper technique, rhythmic accuracy, dynamics, articulations, and phrasing which will result in outstanding ensemble performances. This is a performing ensemble and as such, students will perform in two concerts a year (winter and spring) and other performances including festivals and pep band.
JAZZ BAND
Pre-Requisites: Prior instrumental music experience is a must.
Jazz Band is an upper level performance ensemble that provides students with experiences in playing jazz music. Students will not only perform jazz, but will get an overview of the past and present trends in jazz history with emphasis on major figures and styles central to the development of jazz. Students will study and apply the principles of jazz improvisation as they relate to chord structures, scales, and style. This is a performing ensemble and as such, students will perform in two concerts a year (winter and spring) and other performances including jazz festivals.
MUSIC APPRECIATION
Open to all students regardless of musical background.
All students will be educated in the basic elements of music. Students will also be instructed on how to be aware of these elements when listening to a wide variety of styles of music, including rock and roll, hip hop, blues, jazz, classical, and movie soundtracks. Students will be able to express their own tastes in music and develop a respect for other’s tastes as well. Students do not need a musical background to be successful in class, but all students must have an open mind and a desire to learn.
STUDY OF ROCK AND ROLL
Open to all students regardless of musical background.
History of Rock and Roll is a course designed to familiarize students with the history of rock music. Prominent players and groups of each era will be covered, as well as sociological, economic, and cultural factors that shaped the many styles of rock music. Classroom activities will include listening, performing, analyzing, writing, class discussions, research, and presentation.
