English Language Arts

Course offerings in the English Language Arts program have been structured on a semester basis to provide as many areas of study as possible.  All English Language Arts courses will emphasize reading, written and oral communication, as well as reinforce the importance of vocabulary building, formal register, and grammatical accuracy.

IN ALL CASES, STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE THE COURSE REQUIREMENTS OF EACH GRADE LEVEL WITH A PASSING GRADE IN ORDER TO GRADUATE FROM RAWLINS HIGH SCHOOL.

ENGLISH 9

English 9 is required for ALL 9th grade students.

English 9 is a required, year-long Language Arts course designed for freshman year students. It follows the beginning literacy requirements in the Wyoming Common Core 9-10 Standards for Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening, and Language.

ENGLISH 10

English 10 is required for ALL 10th grade students.

English 10 is a required, year-long Language Arts course designed for sophomore year students. It follows the literacy requirements in the Wyoming Common Core 9-10 Standards for Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening, and Language.

ENGLISH 11

English 11 is required for ALL 11th grade students.

English 11 is a required, year-long, two-semester Language Arts course designed for junior year students. It follows the beginning literacy requirements in the Wyoming Common Core 11-12 Standards for Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening, and Language.

ENGLISH 12

English 12 is required for ALL 12th grade students.

English 12 is a required, year-long, two-semester Language Arts course designed for senior year students. It finishes the literacy requirements as put forth in the adopted Common Core 11-12 Standards in Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening, and Language.

WWCC ENGLISH 1010 & 1020

Wyoming Western Community College (WWCC) concurrent courses are a semester-long and follow the syllabus of WWCC for ENGL 1010, 1020, and other courses as needed. Students will receive both WWCC college credit and an equivalent RHS English credit (English 11 or 12). Students must have a score of 24 on the ACT, a 75 on the Compass, or previous admission to WWCC in order to enroll in these courses. Students will have to score a C or better to receive WWCC credit for the course.

*These courses are available through WWCC only. Students register with the college and are given an off campus period to complete the course work at The Carbon County Higher Education Center.

READING INTERVENTION

Reading Intervention is an intensive reading program designed to meet the needs of students whose reading achievement is below the proficient level.  The program directly addresses individual needs through adaptive and instructional software, high-interest literature, and direct instruction in reading and writing skills.

*Placement is based upon the student’s assessment scores & teacher recommendations.
