Mathematics
Correct placement of freshmen students is an important factor in a student’s success in mathematics courses at the high school level and beyond. Teacher recommendations will provide the information necessary for placement of students.
The exact placement of freshman math students will be based on a screening process, which includes, but is not limited to, student success in middle school mathematics courses and teacher recommendation. No high school credit is given for Algebra I or Geometry taken in middle school at this time. However, students who take these courses in middle school will receive Hathaway credit for these courses.
Most high school mathematics classes are sequential, and for that reason, students must meet the standards for a given class. Consequently, students may have to repeat a class prior to going to the next level class. To increase the student’s chance for success at a higher level, math classes may be repeated, however, credit will be given only once for a repeated course. For example, if Algebra I is repeated, credit will be given for the semester that the student has earned the highest grade. Math teachers and school counselors will help in the placement of students.
Pre-Algebra
This year-long course content includes, but is not limited to, preparation for Algebra 1 concepts: integers, equations, graphing linear equations, inequalities, data analysis, simultaneous equations and problem solving; including geometric application.
Algebra 1
Pre-Requisite: Pre-Algebra or recommendation of the teacher.
Curriculum Map and Pacing Guide
This year-long course content includes, but is not limited to: integers, equations, graphing linear equations, inequalities, data analysis, simultaneous equations and problem solving; including geometric application.
Geometry
Pre-Requisite: Algebra I or recommendation of the teacher.
Curriculum Map and Pacing Guide
This year-long course will include: the study of points and lines, angles, if-then statements, reflections, polygons, transformations and congruence, triangle congruence, measurement formulas, three-dimensional figures, surface area and volumes, coordinate geometry, similarity, logic and indirect reasoning, vectors, and circles.
Algebra II
Pre-Requisite: Algebra I and Geometry or recommendation of the teacher.
Curriculum Map and Pacing Guide
This year-long course will include: the study of equations, inequalities, functions, systems of linear equations and inequalities, matrices, determinants, quadratic functions, polynomials, polynomial functions, quadratic relations and conic sections, sequences and series, and probability and statistics. This course will provide enrichment for the advanced math student beyond the basic standards.
ADVANCED ALGEBRA/TRIGONOMETRY
Pre-Requisite: Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry. Offered by teacher recommendation only.
Curriculum Map and Pacing Guide
This year-long course will emphasize advanced algebra skills, Trigonometry and a review of Algebra II including equations, quadratics, matrices, polynomials, and rational expressions.
PRE-CALCULUS
Pre-Requisite: Pass Algebra II with a minimum grade of C. Offered by teacher recommendation only.
Curriculum Map and Pacing Guide
The year-long course content includes, but is not limited to: logarithm problems, trigonometric identities, infinite series, conic sections, matrices and determinants, echelon solutions, the proofs of geometry in two-column form, and similar polygons. At this level, students are ready to analyze the abstractions of the concrete problems they have practiced. This course will provide enrichment for the advanced math student beyond the basic standards.
CALCULUS
Pre-Requisite: Pass Pre-Calculus with a minimum grade of C. Offered by teacher recommendation only.
Curriculum Map and Pacing Guide
The year-long course content includes, but is not limited to reviewing logarithmic and trigonometric functions, limits, derivatives, and integrals. This course will provide enrichment for the advanced math student beyond the basic standards.
CONSUMER MATH
Pre-Requisite: Algebra I and Geometry (Open to 11th and 12th graders only). Offered by teacher recommendation only.
Curriculum Map and Pacing Guide
This year-long course content will include: banking, income tax, stocks and bonds, insurance, and other topics. Vocational Math will involve real world applications such as welding, construction, and other topics.
This course fulfills the graduation requirements for Rawlins High School, but does not for some colleges and universities, and DOES NOT qualify for the Hathaway.
MATH INTERVENTION
This class is structured to strengthen basic Algebra/mathematical skills. It is designed to enhance student learning in conjunction with their current math course. It will count as an elective credit.
*Placement is based upon the student’s standardized assessment scores & teacher recommendations.
