Social Studies

WORLD HISTORY & GEOGRAPHY

Year-long course. It is a flexible requirement as to when it is completed. If not taken as a Freshmen, it must be completed by the end of Sophomore year.

Geography includes concepts that are instrumental in the understanding of our world today.  Map reading and interpretation will be applied and students will explore global relationships between countries and peoples.  The inquiry approach is utilized and emphasis is placed on student’s participation.  The course is designed to give an overview of geographic concepts and the inter-relationship of these factors that make our world the one we know today.

World History introduces students to the cultural changes man has gone through focusing mainly on the Eastern Civilizations.  Emphasis is placed on social, cultural and economic history as well as political history. The Hathaway Scholarship requires a World History course; therefore, college bound students should consider this course if they plan to go to a post-secondary institution in Wyoming.

U.S. HISTORY

Year-long class. It is a flexible Requirement as to when it is completed. If not taken as a Sophomore, it must be taken as a Junior.

This course follows a chronological review of the history of the American People from 1865.  It will concentrate on those political, social and economic trends that have helped shape our present-day society.

AMERICAN GOVERNMENT

One semester course offered both semesters.  Open to 11th and 12th grade students only. It is a requirement for graduation. 

American Government is designed to help students achieve a basic understanding of the government of the United States and the rights and responsibilities of American citizenship.  This course encourages student interest and participation in the American political system.  Most importantly, the students should become concerned and involved citizens who are able to make informed choices about the world in which they live.

PSYCHOLOGY

One semester course offered both semesters.  Open to 10th, 11th and 12th grade students that are in good academic standing.

Psychology is a field that studies the human mind and behavior.  By studying psychology, we wish to understand and explain people’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.  Uses of psychology include the treatment of mental health, self-help, and many other areas affecting health and daily life. The purpose of this course is to take such topics as ethics and moral fiber and apply these to everyday situations – the application of psychology to your own life.  Specific subjects discussed will be psychology’s history, various schools of thought, and current events in psychology.

CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN PROBLEMS

One semester course offered both semesters. Open to students in 10th, 11th, and 12th grade that are in good academic standing.

The current generation of America is faced with a rapidly changing society. This class is designed to provide background and perspective for the individual to understand and cope with the complex issues arising from this dynamic environment.  Emphasis will be placed on current events. Specific subjects of inquiry will vary from year to year.  Past units have included: 1) War on Drugs, 2) Loss of Fourth Amendment protection, 3) Taxes, 4) Social Security Crisis, 5) Race Relations, 6) Troubled Teens, 7) Environmental Issues, 8) Internet Privacy.
